Dalmatolacerta oxycephala
Dalmatolacerta oxycephala, commonly known as the Dalmatian Skink, is an endemic lizard species found primarily in the coastal regions of Croatia, particularly in the Dalmatian region.
Characterised by its elongated body and a distinctively flattened head, this species typically exhibits greenish to brownish hues, with some individuals showcasing dark stripes along their backs. The Dalmatian Skink thrives in rocky, arid environments, often inhabiting dry, scrubby landscapes and the edges of forests where it can find shelter in crevices or under stones.
As a primarily insectivorous species, it plays a role in controlling insect populations in its ecosystem. However, like many endemic species, it faces threats from habitat loss due to human activity, making conservation efforts essential to its survival.
Given its restricted range and specialised habitat needs, the Dalmatian Skink remains a key species in understanding the biodiversity of the Croatian coastline and highlights the importance of preserving natural habitats for future generations.
