Jynx torquilla

Jynx torquilla, commonly known as the Wryneck, is a unique and intriguing bird species that can be found in various habitats across Croatia, particularly in open woodlands, orchards, and hedgerows.

This small, elusive bird is easily recognised by its distinctive behaviour, including a remarkable ability to twist its neck in a corkscrew motion, which it often displays when threatened. The Wryneck has a cryptic plumage of brown and grey tones that provides excellent camouflage among tree bark and foliage. Its diet primarily consists of ants, beetles, and other insects, which it captures using its long, sticky tongue.

As a migratory species, the Wryneck arrives in Croatia during the warmer months to breed, making its presence a delightful seasonal highlight for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts alike.
