Vipera ammodytes
Vipera ammodytes, commonly known as the Horned Viper, is a venomous snake species native to Croatia, typically found in a variety of habitats, including rocky hillsides, forests, and scrubland.
Its distinctive feature is a prominent, horn-like structure on the nose, which gives the species its common name. The horn is not used for defense but may play a role in mating displays. This species is a slow-moving predator, feeding primarily on small mammals, birds, and amphibians.
While Vipera ammodytes's venom can be harmful, it is generally not fatal to humans, and bites are rarely life-threatening with prompt medical attention. Despite being an important part of the ecosystem, the Horned Viper faces threats from habitat destruction, illegal collection, and human persecution.
Conservation measures are vital to ensure its survival in Croatia.
